Happiness Day

JOURNAL

When I was 5, my mom gave me my first diary and was taught to write in it every night before going to sleep. To this day, I haven't stopped handwriting my personal thoughts, stories, and self-reflections in my journal.

This is a place for me to share what I find beautiful in my adventures, what makes me excited and passionate, and all the lessons I learn along the way.

Happiness Day

Fiona Yeung

‘Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.’ -Dalai Lama

Today is March 20th which is also known as the International happiness day! Happiness is a simple yet complicated emotion. I'm a pretty positive and optimistic person, and find that for the most part, I live a happy life. It's not because everything in my life is perfect, and that things always end up exactly the way I want, but it's how we look at every situation that we are put in. I'm a firm believer that there is something good in every bad situation. A lot of the times, I am happy because there is so much beauty around me in life. So much to be grateful for and whenever I think of that, all my personal problems seem to be put into perspective.

So to celebrate happiness day, I'm going to list out a few things in my life that make me happy. I realize a lot of the times that I am happy are often due to the mundane things in our daily lives. So take a moment and look at your life and just take it all in. Smile and be proud of yourself.

What makes me happy:

  • My family, my friends, my boyfriend
  • Being able to travel to see new sights and to try new foods
  • Lying on the sand and listening to the sound of ocean waves
  • HONY (Humans of New York)
  • Seeing people in love, seeing people excited
  • Making others happy
  • Seeing the final result of design projects
  • Hearing people laugh
  • Looking at old photos
  • Driving with the windows down
  • Blue skies and palm trees

I am fascinated by so much that it's not hard for me to find happiness. There will no doubt be bad days but quite honestly, I think I've reached a point in my life where I truly know how to be happy and it's a great feeling! If you find yourself having hard time being happy, take some time and reflect. Count your blessings, have more self-compassion, do what you love, and surround yourself with those that put a smile on your face. A lot of the times, happiness is the uncovering of what you already have. You don’t need to change anything about yourself, or your life. You just need to see what’s already there. Take action to do the things that make you happy, with the people who make you happy, and to be happy with the person you are now.

  • Do what you love
  • Notice the small things
  • Be grateful, be present
  • Focus on the positives
  • Simplify your life (declutter and lose the baggage!)

"There are always flowers for those who want to see them." - Henri Matisse

So what makes you happy? :)
